The summer
has begun & is already almost over! We are half through our Summer Intensive Program and enjoying every minute of it.
As we wind up the current program by Tuesday, August 17th, we are eager to begin the Fall Class Schedule in September and
onto the many events planned for the rest of the year. Highlights include:
- belly dance workshop with Suhaila
Salimpour - first ever Houston Flamenco Festival - Skype classes - PLUS new day classes added to the schedule!
This summer has also been very eventful. We were honored to have the lovely Ansuya back for another belly dance
certification workshop. Also, a group of our flamenco students participated in the annual Bay Area Flamenco Festival headlining
Bailaora, Manuela Carrasco, & Cantoar, Agujetas, in San Fransisco. Here's a sampling of what some of our students had
to say about both events:
"A one in a lifetime opportunity to see the master in front of you, teaching you
not only the technique but the emotional essence of her incredible immortal solea. I've realized that I went to San Francisco
not to comprehend the patterns of her dance or sequences of intricate steps but realize how much gypsiness one must have and
how one should command it to execute a dance such as traditional solea. What was also pleasant to find out is that Manuela
shares the same philosophy that Maria del Espadin and La Tempestad have been teaching us. Manuela, La Reina y La Diosa, kept
commenting on arms, posture, facial expression, etc and her words echoed what we are told in the studio, such as preserve
femininity, no robotic moves, arms breathe, posture and simple but cleanly done moves are more important than a vigorous marathon-like
footwork. You have to bring out your "dios"-isness first and then proceed with something highly technical."
-- Eya
"The flamenco workshop was outstanding! Manuela Carrasco is an inspiration! It was fun
traveling with my flamenco friends from Houston and meeting some new ones in San Francisco. I am definitely returning next
year!" -- Joyce
"The trip to San Francisco was such a great experience! It was fun, it was adventurous,
and it was enlightening. Learning from "La diosa", the great Manuela Carrasco and watching her perform was of course
the best part of it. With her we learned that real flamenco is not always about footwork and constant movement, but about
presence and knowing how to walk, or stand still and hold time. We learned that the arms caress the body and we learned to
embrace our inner goddess. We also learned some very "colorful" spanish 'frases'." -- Nadia
"I had so much fun at Ansuya's workshop, and it opened my eyes to new ways of challenging myself
in the form of belly dance. Everyone should have this experience--even if they can't catch all the choreography, the atmosphere
of learning was totally positive and welcoming and super fun!" -- Andreana
Plenty more coming soon! For constant updates, please join our Facebook pages - DEL ESPADIN

Special thanks to all our students & their families,

opportunity to continue preserving Flamenco Puro & the art of Belly Dance here in Houston.

Message from Tempestad:
First & foremost, I would like to thank all who supported
me in my return to the tablao since my car wreck last December. It was wonderful to see so many familiar faces and to
welcome new ones to the Houston Flamenco family. I will forever be grateful to all those who stuck by me through this
very trying & difficult time in my life. Your support, loyalty & encouragement for me to get back on my feet
meant the world to me!
Special thanks to my family...most importantly, Mama Flamenca!, because without Mama
none of this would be possible for not only me, but for so many of us who adore flamenco!...to all of our AMAZING students...it
makes me so proud to see you LIVE flamenco...to Lucia & Val for being our special guests at such a significant event,
& to all our wonderful aficionados & friends!
