Carrying on a generations-old family tradition, Maria Del Espadín and her daughter, Tempestad, bring decades of teaching & performing experience to their students.

Regardless of the constant commercialization and modernization of Flamenco, Mama Flamenca and La Hija Flamenca (as affectionately called by their many students) strive to preserve the authenticity of Flamenco and to present Flamenco to the public as the gypsies of Andalucia intended Flamenco to be. To learn true Flamenco...not only as the music & dance that it is, but also as a way of life...this Flamenco family invites you to come observe a class or try one out at no expense upon registering with the Academy. We invite you to experience first-hand what it is that sets Del Espadín Flamenco & Spanish Dance Academy apart from all others!

All new registrants can try out their first Flamenco class for free.  Please visit www.flamencohouston.com & print the coupon from the home page to present at time the class is taken. Coupon applies to only first Flamenco or Belly Dance class.  All other classes and/or workshops are excluded from this promotion.

Saludos!
The summer has begun & is already almost over! We are half through our Summer Intensive Program and enjoying every minute of it. As we wind up the current program by Tuesday, August 17th, we are eager to begin the Fall Class Schedule in September and onto the many events planned for the rest of the year. Highlights include:

- belly dance workshop with Suhaila Salimpour
- first ever Houston Flamenco Festival
- Skype classes
- PLUS new day classes added to the schedule!

This summer has also been very eventful. We were honored to have the lovely Ansuya back for another belly dance certification workshop. Also, a group of our flamenco students participated in the annual Bay Area Flamenco Festival headlining Bailaora, Manuela Carrasco, & Cantoar, Agujetas, in San Fransisco. Here's a sampling of what some of our students had to say about both events:

"A one in a lifetime opportunity to see the master in front of you, teaching you not only the technique but the emotional essence of her incredible immortal solea. I've realized that I went to San Francisco not to comprehend the patterns of her dance or sequences of intricate steps but realize how much gypsiness one must have and how one should command it to execute a dance such as traditional solea. What was also pleasant to find out is that Manuela shares the same philosophy that Maria del Espadin and La Tempestad have been teaching us. Manuela, La Reina y La Diosa, kept commenting on arms, posture, facial expression, etc and her words echoed what we are told in the studio, such as preserve femininity, no robotic moves, arms breathe, posture and simple but cleanly done moves are more important than a vigorous marathon-like footwork. You have to bring out your "dios"-isness first and then proceed with something highly technical." -- Eya

Manuela & Temp

"The flamenco workshop was outstanding! Manuela Carrasco is an inspiration! It was fun traveling with my flamenco friends from Houston and meeting some new ones in San Francisco. I am definitely returning next year!" -- Joyce

"The trip to San Francisco was such a great experience! It was fun, it was adventurous, and it was enlightening. Learning from "La diosa", the great Manuela Carrasco and watching her perform was of course the best part of it. With her we learned that real flamenco is not always about footwork and constant movement, but about presence and knowing how to walk, or stand still and hold time. We learned that the arms caress the body and we learned to embrace our inner goddess. We also learned some very "colorful" spanish 'frases'." -- Nadia

La Manuela Carrasco & DEFSDA

"I had so much fun at Ansuya's workshop, and it opened my eyes to new ways of challenging myself in the form of belly dance. Everyone should have this experience--even if they can't catch all the choreography, the atmosphere of learning was totally positive and welcoming and super fun!" -- Andreana

Ansuya & Andreana
Plenty more coming soon! For constant updates, please join our Facebook pages - DEL ESPADIN FLAMENCO & SPANISH DANCE ACADEMY or SORAYA & LA ZAMBRA - links located on the home pages of our sites listed below or over on the left-hand side of our newsletter.

Special thanks to all our students & their families, & to all the supporters of Del Espadin Flamenco & Soraya's School of Belly Dance. Without you we would not have the opportunity to continue preserving Flamenco Puro & the art of Belly Dance here in Houston.

Muchisimas gracias & Shokran!

Saludos a Todos!

Message from Tempestad:

First & foremost, I would like to thank all who supported me in my return to the tablao since my car wreck last December.  It was wonderful to see so many familiar faces and to welcome new ones to the Houston Flamenco family.  I will forever be grateful to all those who stuck by me through this very trying & difficult time in my life.  Your support, loyalty & encouragement for me to get back on my feet meant the world to me!

Special thanks to my family...most importantly, Mama Flamenca!, because without Mama none of this would be possible for not only me, but for so many of us who adore flamenco!...to all of our AMAZING students...it makes me so proud to see you LIVE flamenco...to Lucia & Val for being our special guests at such a significant event, & to all our wonderful aficionados & friends!

NOW on to new things!!!

Cuadro La Tempestad will be back at Cafe Byblos on Wednesday, July 29, 2009!  We are very excited to be introducing two new flamenco artists to Houston.  Guillermo Serpas, guitarrista, will be joining the Cuadro, & Marisol Monasterio will be making her cante debut!

Please join us at Cafe Byblos on July 29th to welcome Guillermo & Marisol to the tablao!

Muchisimas gracias y abrazos a todos!
